Our rising star scoops national award

We are delighted to share that our Trainee Building Surveyor, Oliver Harling, has won the Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing, Rising Stars Award 2018. We couldn’t be prouder!

Announced last night at the Housing Heroes awards in Manchester, Oliver beat off stiff competition to become the youngest winner of this prestigious competition.

Oliver was living in one of our homes when his mum saw a flyer for a customer service apprenticeship with us. He applied and has gone on to achieve numerous professional qualifications and made a successful career for himself in building surveying. Oliver has a heart for customers and a head for business, and is a prime example of a passionate and inspiring future housing leader.

The tough competition showcases the talent and commitment of up-and-coming housing professionals across the housing sector. Oliver saw off the competition across three rounds to get through to the final. This involved writing a blog which was published in Inside Housing; a trade magazine for the sector, and participating in a live twitter chat with Inside Housing.

Oliver successfully made it to the final five who took part in a round table discussion with leaders in the sector. Oliver was assessed on his performance throughout and the judges were impressed by his passion and talent.

They said “Our 2018 Rising Stars winner showed impressive passion and commitment, as well as fresh perspectives and ideas. Having started out as an apprentice, this star rose quickly, grasping opportunities to turn a job into a career. One of our youngest finalists to date, our winner combines strong values, commitment to tenant focus and optimism for the future.”

As this year’s winner, Oliver will benefit from numerous opportunities to develop including mentoring from a sector leader. He will also guest edit an issue of Inside Housing.

Oliver said “I am looking forward to being mentored this year, I am going to voice my views and share my ambition to make a change in the sector. I want to use my personal journey as a tenant and apprentice to inspire the next generation of housing leaders.”

He went on to say, “Being named the rising star of the country is a huge achievement and I feel truly honoured and ready to make a difference.”

Sasha Deepwell, Chief Executive of irwell valley homes said “As the winner of Rising Stars Oliver will now enjoy a year of fantastic opportunities - speaking with industry leaders, having a mentor and even guest editing Inside Housing magazine! We are immensely proud of Oliver. Our colleagues are only limited by their own ambitions and throughout his time with us he has shown real drive and determination to succeed. He is great example of how apprenticeships add value to an organisation and can truly help people to realise their potential. We are really excited to see where his career will take him."
